As Editor for the site, I try to be fair about who gets what assignments rather than taking all the fun things for myself. Wolverine was quite a bit of fun. So in the nature of trying something amidst having reservations – I figured I’d check out Sacred 2. This was, as I soon learned, a terrible, terrible mistake.
To preface my experience, I loved Diablo and its sequel and even had respect for Sacred 1, although it admittedly wasn’t as fun as Diablo – it offered a number of new features, was fully 3d, and had a staggering amount of gameplay although it was as finely polished.
Sacred 2 for the Xbox 360 is almost a total loss by all standards.
Sacred 2 doesn’t take itself seriously by any respect, and it allows them to do some funny things and throw a curve ball or two outside what you might expect for a top down hack and slash RPG.
However, humor does not forgive poor game design. When I booted up the game and began playing as a shadow warrior – I knew something was wrong when I tried to go into the inventory screen and needed to squint to see the stats for the equipment. The typeface/font size is brutal. At first I thought it was me, my eyes aren’t great, so I had my wife check it out who decided this would be a game that she’d have to sit closer to the screen if she was going to play it.
After watching me play for a half an hour, and reading the back of the box – she decided to play with me. After deciding on her character and joining my game, we were horrified to find that co-op play on the same system killed the ability to move or zoom the camera – so you’re stuck as humanly far away as possible from your character. When you begin to be attacked by hordes of enemies – this is a pretty big problem as you can’t see where you are let alone where the other player is should they need help. I can’t imagine playing this on a standard definition TV as it was impossible to play same system co-op on my 37 inch HDTV.
My wife decided going blind wasn’t worth playing with me and I continued to play the game alone. My character’s story was something along the lines that he had been a warrior who had fallen in battle and was resurrected… for some reason. I’m not quite sure why and it still hasn’t been explained – it doesn’t seem related at all to what I’m doing in the main quest. To make matters worse – I had to figure out to play as I went along with little explanation as to my abilities or the system for improving your character as there was no tutorial.

Thank you, I was considering buying this game for a friend. I guess I will make the right choice now. |

Wow, that sounds awful. I have this for the PC, and obviously a lot of the problems you faced are still present, but the camera and controls are much more precise. I've never died, and I like the game a lot, but it just gets same-y after a while. Still, if you find it for the PC (and a low price) it's a good way to keep you busy until Torchlight or Diablo 3 get here. |

Perhaps it's because we're playing co-op, but Adelle and I LOVE this game. There're definitely some cheesy bits, and it might get a bit repetitive or lack polish in areas, but it's a tried-and-true type of gameplay and the character classes are different enough from other action-rpg stereotypes to warrant investigating. Also I think you failed to mention that the soundtrack for the game features Blind Guardian. You've never felt so epic smashing rats with a hammer until you've done so to some crazy power metal ballads. |

Before we got the new TV Sacred 2 was pretty much impossible to play AT ALL. Your right the text is really small. Now that we have a 42 inch LCD we can see everything just fine. Do not buy this game if you dont have a bitching TV. It was really sad to see it built to rely so heavily on a huge TV. That being said we dont have a problem with same system co-op. Although playing co-op over Live is better. You are right that the menu system needs some help although I find the button mapping not too hard. I am not as far as you were in the game yet as I keep getting distracted by side quests but I'm getting there. Now I shall ride my epic tiger off into the sunset to Blind Guardian. |

I have to agree with Dan and Adelle (Deli) on this one. I think this game is brilliant if a little repetitive at times. To date i have only uncovered about 30% of the map but have had great fun slaying giant golems, the aforementioned invincible octopus which lasted minutes and huge dragons. Some of the graphics can be a little ropey but the bosses are pretty epic. Co op is also fun with the right people and the feeling of charging into battle on the back of a mythic beast whilst flinging fire and lightining around prior to hacking the enemy to pieces with dual wielded weapons, all to a gothic score interspersed with Blind Guardian snippets, is immense. The cherry on top of the pie is the Blind Guardian quest which nets you an entire track played by CG versions of the band to an audience from the netherworld, to a stalwart RPG and Blind Guardian fan such as myself, things don't get much better. Sublime if ultimately flawed, i would recommend it to RPG and hack and slash fans alike |
