Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is ‘God of Wolverine’ in a nutshell. If you like the idea of playing a pretty good movie to game conversion that doesn’t really innovate, but plays pretty decently – you should keep reading.

Wolverine takes some liberties with the movie’s course of events, but doesn’t really damage anything considering the movie’s narrative is barely worth trying to salvage. The fact of the matter is that this won’t be a game you play for the story. Basically, the story follows Logan’s path to becoming Wolverine. You’ll play through various parts of Wolverine’s quest for revenge for the death of the woman he loves, while frequently flashing back to the events of a mission gone horribly wrong in the African jungle.

wolv_2What is mainly interesting is the prolog and epilogue videos which take place in a ‘not too distant future’. The prolog depicts a more grizzled long haired wolverine departing from anything shown in the movie attacking heavily armed soldiers. This intro video then leads into Wolverine’s disastrous mission in the jungle. The epilogue, while referencing an important event in the course of the main game, is again separate from the rest of the game/movie and leads into what could be potentially be a sequel to the game/movie – but in my opinion is actually probably a more interesting time/setting for a wolverine game.

Apparently, the game was in production before the movie was. It’s just conjecture but it almost seems as if these videos were a direction for the game before the movie got into full swing. The problem is they act as a tease that never pays off.

The general opinion seems to be that this game would have been a lot better without the movie license screwing it up.

Yeah... and as I said - the design and opening/ending cinemas give the impression it was a much different game at some point. That being said - its still not a bad game as long as you kinda ignore the story.
