It’s satisfying to watch these characters pummel each other and retreat, or even die, as the constantly shifting battlefield offers up brilliant spells, intricate combat animations, and monstrous deaths and attacks. It’s always important to keep an eye on the rest of the fight, but you could easily be forgiven if you decided to zoom in on your vampire Demigod as he turns into a bloodsucking cloud of mist, or watch as your Oak comes back from the dead in the form of a brilliantly lit version of his former living self.At launch, the game was plagued by masses of pirates clogging servers, awful server connections and frequently unplayable matches, and other issues. The game is still in what many might consider to be an unfinished state, with several key mechanics broken or buggy, and lag and hang-ups a frequent issue. You’ll get over it if you like it enough. Yes, we shouldn’t give developers and publishers a pass, especially when a title is as initially flawed as Demigod was and is.
However, the game is an enthralling experience, and was one at launch, surprisingly. Now, as Stardock and GPG rush to fix the game’s multiplayer issues, there’s hardly any reason not to pick up the game. It’s more fun than most games released recently, and it’s like almost nothing I’ve played before.
The Good
Fantastic Graphics, Sound: Your armies clash amid flashing spells and sweeping weapons, and your Demigods cavort and clash in an irresistibly kinetic way.
Fun, Involving Multiplayer: There enough maps that you’ll be figuring out their ins and outs for a long while yet, and it’s easy to find opponents with new and deadly strategies to test your skills against.
The Bad
Some Elements Still Not Retail-Worthy: The game’s Favor point system, used to buy items, is broken, and connecting to players often results in glitches crashes.
The Ugly
Atrocious Launch: If you were there at the beginning, you know what I mean. If you weren’t count yourself as very, very lucky.
Recommendation: After a start that could best be described as catastrophic, Demigod is finding its legs, and as more legitimate players (aided by Stardock’s constant patches) gamers enter the fray, the community and game are shaping up to be some of the most inventive, truly fun experiences to be had on any system or computer.
Playthrough: Played through multiple matches online and offline as every Demigod, losing most of the time.
