I sat down last night and attempted to feel my way through the Japanese demo of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Given that I had no kind of transcript and do not know Japanese yet, it was an interesting experience --- to say the least. If you still haven’t gotten your hands on the demo yet (it was released at the Tokyo Game Show this week), IGN posted it Wednesday and it can be downloaded here for free (http://psp.ign.com/articles/102/1027904p1.html).

I had a chance last weekend at PAX to score a private demo of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, Capcom's follow-up to 2007's The Umbrella Chronicles. Like its predecessor, Darkside Chronicles focuses on retelling the stories of past Resident Evil games ( Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica, in this case) for the Wii audience. While I only got to try out the first chapter of the Code Veronica-inspired Rockfort Island scenario, I can safely say that the development team is mindful of what needed to change this time around.

Recently, Microsoft released part one of their fall Xbox360 dashboard update preview to a limited group of gamers that applied for early access. I was lucky enough to get selected for what is ostensibly a two week jump on the rest of 360 owners. The update will hit for everyone else on August 11.
Before I delve into what this update includes, there are some notable features announced at E3 this year that the first half of the fall tweaks does not include. Most notably absent are Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm compatibility along with the highly touted Zune-branded 1080p video streaming service. These are all set to be put into place in the second round up updates later this fall. I was pleased however, to find that many new features have already been implemented.

When I was a kid, I was never much into watching basketball, with football being the sport that captured my imagination. Sure, I was sort of into watching the Dallas Mavericks (I was living in Dallas during my formative years) but I was rarely more than a casual fan. So, when it came to a choice of what sports game to buy with my hard earned lawn mowing and chore money, it was a no brainer: Madden. But things changed when I played NBA Jam for the first time. I only understood the bare bones of the rules and strategies of basketball and knew very few of the players. Even at twelve years old, I knew that the craziness of breaking the backboard, heating up, and the general fast pace of the video game hardly resembled real basketball. But it didn’t matter, because as the casual fan I was, it was the gameplay, not the accuracy of the simulation, which grabbed me. So it was that NBA Jam has the distinction of being the only non-football sports game I’ve ever bought.

Red Faction: Guerilla is the third title in Volition's Red Faction series, set to be released in June. The series' claim to fame has been the trademark geo-mod technology which allows for real-time destruction and deformation of the gameplay environment. To date, no developer has attempted to duplicate this feat - but just executing this gameplay concept on a next-gen platform wasn't enough for Volition. They are taking a new approach to many of Red Faction's elements, the least of which is that the game will be shifting from first person to third person.

What do you get when you mix franchises like "The Club" and "Streets of Rage", then add a little "Hokuto-No-Ken/Fist of the North Star" for style? The result is "MadWorld", shown off in full-force at Comic-Con NY 2009. Developed by Platinum Games and published by Sega, MadWorld is set for a Wii-sclusive release March 10th. MadWorld stars a mechanic named Jack living in Varrigan City. The city has been taken over by a group of maniacs called "The Organizers" who have locked up the city and its residents, filling the streets with deadly traps and homicidal maniacs. “The Organizers” have done so for the purpose of hosting a mysterious game show, "Death Watch", for the citizens of Varrigan city are now all unwilling participants. Jack, barricaded inside the city, now sets his eyes on the one-hundred-million dollar prize for being the last man standing in this "Battle Royale" style deathmatch.

Dragon Age: Origins is a new IP coming out of the BioWare studios. It’s currently slated for release in the second half of 2009 for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. After playing the demo, Dragon Age should be a great buy for those looking for a grittier, bloodier Baldur’s Gate.

2009 has a lot in store for fans of fighting games. As someone who has been known to throw down the occasional combo or two, I'm pretty excited. If you're wondering what the homeboys with the Sanwa sticks will be up to this year, the following should give you a quick rundown. King of Fighters 98 Ultimate - PS2 Dropping just at the end of January, KoF98U will get the year off proper. For those of you not in the know, King of Fighters 98 is a "Dream Match" in the KoF series. Basically, every so many years SNK will break the continuity of the KoF storyline and offer players a chance to go all out using characters from previous games whether they were technically still participating (or in some cases, deceased!). While this might not sound like a big deal to players not familiar with SNK, you have to realize that they encompass three separate fighting franchises (Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters) so they've got TONS of characters to draw upon. If you though Marvel vs. Capcom 2 had a roster, just wait until you get a look at this one. At $19.99 new for PS2, it's as much proof that the PS2 still has some life as it is proof the American dollar is still worth something.
